Computer Systems Analyst Salary for 2027

Computer systems analysts earned a median of $105,850 a year in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This report covers the full percentile range, every state, the top-paying metros and industries, and how the job compares with software development and related roles.

Key takeaways

  1. Computer systems analysts earned a median of $105,850 a year in May 2025, with the middle half of workers between $82,860 and $134,110. The job sits between a business and its technology, so pay depends on the industry and the systems you own as much as on your coding skill.
  2. Rhode Island has the highest state median, $134,630, and 19 states sit above the national figure. BLS medians are not adjusted for living costs, so a higher number in an expensive state is not automatically a raise. Find your own state in the state table before comparing offers.
  3. Systems analysts work across more of the economy than most computer jobs. Computer systems design and related services employs the most, and management of companies and enterprises, government (federal, state and local), insurance carriers and related activities and general medical and surgical hospitals follow. That spread means analyst jobs exist in almost any region, though the medians differ by industry, as the chart below shows.
  4. BLS projects systems analyst jobs to grow 7.9% from 2025 to 2035, against 3.5% for all occupations, with about 32,900 openings a year. Most of those openings come from people retiring or changing jobs rather than from new positions, which keeps hiring steady.
  5. BLS publishes no pay by years of experience or by degree for this occupation, so this page does not either. BLS lists a bachelor’s degree as the typical entry education, and many analysts hold degrees in computer science, information systems or business. Compare degree costs.

The mean, $114,610, sits above the median because a smaller group at the top of the range pulls the average up. For a sense of what most people earn, the median and the middle half, $82,860 to $134,110, are the better guide.

Where BLS expects demand to rise. In its projection notes, BLS names monetary authorities-central bank, direct insurance (except life, health, and medical) carriers and accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services as industries where systems analysts will make up a growing share of jobs, mostly as payment systems and work processes go digital.

West Virginia: BLS released no statewide median for this occupation, so the row shows the Huntington metro area’s median from the same release.

Computer Systems Analysts, BLS OEWS, May 2025. Location quotient: the state’s share of employment in this job divided by the national share; above 1.00 means the job is more concentrated there than nationally. – means no published figure.

A higher median does not always mean more money left over, because prices differ between states. The price-adjusted column divides each state’s median by its all-items Regional Price Parity from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (2024, US = 100), which puts every state’s median in national-average prices. Adjusted that way, Rhode Island comes out highest, at $131,603.

Each lever is the gap between two published medians, BLS OEWS, May 2025, ranked by size. Places run lowest to highest.

BLS does not publish pay by years of experience or by degree for computer systems analysts, so this ranking uses the gaps it does publish: between places, between employers and between occupations. Each is a gap between two medians, not a raise anyone is promised.

Advice

How to raise your pay

What the figures above suggest, in order of how much they move the numbers.

  1. Know your market before you negotiate. The gap between the highest and lowest state medians is $59,320. Check your own state and metro above, and compare an offer with the local median rather than the national one.
  2. Pick the industry deliberately. Among the industries we checked, employment services pays systems analysts the highest median, $115,980. Because analysts work almost everywhere, the industry choice is a bigger lever here than in most computer jobs.
  3. Move up the range. The 75th percentile is $134,110 and the 90th is $167,710. Owning larger systems, leading implementations and working with leadership on what to build are the usual ways up.
  4. Consider development or architecture. Software developers earn a median $30,130 higher. Analysts who code can move toward development; those who design whole systems can move toward architecture roles.
  5. Weigh a degree against its cost. BLS lists a bachelor’s degree as typical for entry. Compare tuition, graduation rates and ABET status in our bachelor’s ranking.

Growth is only part of the story: new jobs average about 4,290 a year, about 13% of the 32,900 openings a year; the rest open when people retire, change occupations or leave the workforce.
