Key takeaways

  1. University of the People, Southern New Hampshire University and Troy University lead the 25 online computer science bachelor’s programs on affordability: cost carries half the score, and completion, size and accreditation carry the rest, so a cheap program with weak results doesn’t top the list on price alone. How we ranked.
  2. The lowest prices for a whole bachelor’s are at University of the People, University of Arkansas Grantham and Southern New Hampshire University, starting at $7,260. Every price is the school’s own: its online per-credit rate times the credits the degree requires, or the total it states, before aid and transfer credit.
  3. For a master’s, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Colorado Boulder and ASU Online rank highest, and Georgia Institute of Technology, Fitchburg State and University of Illinois Springfield cost the least, from $6,810. Prices run up to $87,744, so the spread between online master’s programs is wide. See the master’s ranking.
  4. The affordability score is a separate measure for this page, built for cost-conscious students. Each program’s overall score on our online rankings doesn’t change, so if quality matters more to you than price, compare this list with the top of our online bachelor’s ranking.
  5. What you pay is usually lower than the list price. Transfer credit, employer tuition benefits and federal aid all bring it down, while fees the school charges separately push it up. Ask every school on your shortlist for a written estimate based on your own transcript.
Methodology

How we ranked

A score out of 100 for each level, with cost weighted most.

Every program here is an online computer science degree we verified on the school’s own page: titled computer science, completable fully online, and priced on the school’s own site. Each factor earns its points on fixed bands, so a solid result earns most of them. The score is for this page only; each program’s overall score on our online bachelor’s or online master’s ranking is unchanged.

Who gets ranked

Pass / fail

A computer science degree the school’s own page says can be completed fully online, with a price on the school’s own site

Hybrid programs and programs with only some courses online don’t qualify. A program missing one of the figures below is not ranked: it is never scored on a guess, and the weights are never quietly rescaled.

Online program cost: School states no tuition; the total is the $60 application fee plus a $180 assessment fee per course, stated as about $7,260 for the 120-credit program.

You'll pay about $7,260 for the whole degree at University of the People, and none of it is tuition. The school charges a $60 application fee and a $180 assessment fee for each course, which it totals at roughly $7,260 across the 120-credit program, or about $60 a credit. Transfer credits lower that figure. The format is built around people with jobs. There are no live lectures and no set class times, so you do your coursework on your own schedule. The university calls the degree 100% online. That flexibility cuts both ways, because nobody sets your pace for you.

Admission asks only for a high school education and that you be 16 or older. The curriculum includes an online education strategies course that introduces you to the learning environment, then moves into programming and computing coursework. The university's six-year graduation rate for first-time, full-time students is 28%, and it awards about 387 computer science bachelor's degrees a year. This one fits if cost is your main constraint and you can keep yourself on schedule without a classroom to hold you to it, because the pace is yours to manage and the degree still takes serious weekly time.

Online program cost: Online undergraduate per-credit rate ($354) times the 120-credit degree; the rate is the school's online undergraduate rate and does not vary by residency.

SNHU's computer science bachelor's runs in 8-week terms, and you pick one course or two per term depending on how much room your job leaves you. The rate is $354 a credit, so the 120-credit degree comes to $42,480 before transfer credit. That's where the real savings are: the university accepts up to 90 transfer credits and requires a minimum of 30 at SNHU, so someone arriving with an associate degree pays for far fewer than 120. If you want to build software for a living, choose the software engineering concentration, which covers software design and development, user interface and user experience techniques, and reverse engineering.

The other concentrations are data analysis, information security and project management for STEM. You can also take up to four graduate courses, 12 credits, at the undergraduate rate and apply them to the online master's in computer science. Expect a large, established online operation. The university reports about 650 computer science bachelor's graduates a year, and its six-year graduation rate for first-time, full-time students is 48%, so plan your pace honestly before you start.

Online program cost: TROY Online undergraduate tuition per credit hour, the rate for TROY Online and support sites (26/T1 - 27/T5); general fee and program fees are listed separately and not included; total uses the catalog's 120 credit hour minimum for a baccalaureate degree.

At $382 per credit hour for TROY Online undergraduate tuition, this is a computer science degree you can take from home on the same curriculum as the Troy campus. Troy states that online students complete coursework remotely and earn the same degree as on-campus students. Fees are billed separately from that rate, so check the general fee and program fees before you budget. You don't need to have programmed before. The first courses build the foundation, and later ones cover data structures, algorithms, software engineering, databases and computer networking.

The course list also includes Introduction to Machine Learning and Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence. Software Engineering I is part of the curriculum, but there's no separate software engineering track to choose. Troy points students toward internships with organizations such as Medicare, CGI, Alfa Insurance and the Internal Revenue Service, guided by the Computer Science Department. As an online student you'll want to ask the department how to set one up near you. The university's six-year graduation rate for first-time, full-time students is 46%, and it awards about 106 computer science bachelor's degrees a year across all formats.

You can finish Franklin's computer science bachelor's entirely online, in 6 and 12-week courses, with start dates spread across the year instead of one fall intake. Tuition is $398 per credit hour for 2026-2027 and the degree is 124 credits, which comes to $49,352 before the $100 resource fee each semester. International students pay $526 per credit. Transfer is where the bill moves most. Franklin accepts up to 94 previously earned credits and says students transfer in about 40% of the credits required on average, and a tuition guarantee locks in your first-term rate for the length of the degree.

Online program cost: Stated online per-credit rate for the program and the stated total tuition; one online undergraduate rate.

Concordia University, St. Paul charges $420 per credit hour for its online computer science bachelor's, which puts total tuition at $50,400 for the 120 credits. The school says the degree can take as few as 2.5 years, and it doesn't follow a cohort model, so you aren't tied to a group's schedule. How fast you finish depends mostly on what you bring in: transfer credits and general education credits change the timeline, and the 55 core credit hours in the major can be completed in seven semesters.

The curriculum covers programming in Java, data structures, object-oriented programming and virtual machines, with electives such as mobile app development or advanced web application development. It ends with a capstone course built around hands-on software development using Agile, which gives you a project to show an employer. Concordia is a private nonprofit. Its six-year graduation rate for first-time, full-time students is 58%, and about 24 students a year finish a computer science bachelor's there. The university also lists $2,000 partnership scholarships.

Online program cost: Non-Florida resident UF Online tuition per credit hour times the 120 credits for degree; required fees ($52.62 per credit hour) and optional fees are not included.

Out-of-state students pay $500 per credit hour in tuition for the UF Online computer science degree, which comes to $60,000 across the 120 credits before fees. Required fees add $52.62 per credit hour for non-Florida residents. That's the number to weigh against other online programs. What you get for it is a University of Florida degree from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. UF says online graduates earn the same degree they would receive on campus. The program pairs the computing work with a liberal arts core of humanities, social and behavioral sciences and foreign languages.

The computing core includes programming fundamentals, data structures and algorithms, operating systems, database systems and software engineering, and you finish with a senior project in the last semester. Transfer applicants with 12 to 59 credits follow the lower division requirements and should have at least a 2.5 overall GPA. Upper division applicants with 60 or more credits need that GPA and specific completed courses, so check the prerequisite list before you apply. The university's six-year graduation rate for first-time, full-time students is 33%, and it awards about 66 computer science bachelor's degrees a year through UF Online.

Online program cost: Out-of-state rate per credit times 120 credits; in-state is $337 and military is $250 per credit; other fees may apply and are not included.

Transfer credit is the main lever at UMGC. You can bring in up to 90 of the 120 credits, so a student with an associate degree or military training can finish far sooner than a first-time student. All courses are available online, a few hybrid courses are offered, and courses run year-round. The rate is $337 per credit for Maryland residents, $250 for military service members and their families, and $499 for everyone else. At the out-of-state rate, 120 credits comes to $59,880, and the school notes other fees apply. Transfer credits come off that 120, so your own total can be well below it.

You don't need any computer science background to start. The course list includes Software Engineering Principles and Techniques (CMSC 345), three specialization courses worth 9 credits, and a Computer Science Capstone (CMSC 495) at the end. There's no separate software engineering track, so the specialization courses are where you steer toward the kind of development work you want. The university's six-year graduation rate for first-time, full-time students is 24%, and it awards about 580 computer science bachelor's degrees a year.

Davenport delivers most of this computer science degree through its Global Campus, where courses can be taken 100% online. The exception is the gaming specialty, which needs the on-campus gaming lab, so an online student picks one of the other two specialties: artificial intelligence, or computer theory and algorithms. The degree is 120 credits at minimum. Core coursework covers software engineering and operating systems alongside programming and the math that computer science requires.

Students finish with a Computer Science Capstone (CSCI 497), and the curriculum also lists a College of Technology Internship course (TECH 490), which gives a route to workplace experience before graduation. The university reports a six-year graduation rate of 51 percent for first-time, full-time students, and about 42 students a year complete this degree. Davenport is a private nonprofit university, and its online courses run through the Global Campus. The school says its small class sizes lead to mentoring relationships with industry-experienced faculty.

Online program cost: 2026-27 graduate RIT online rate (designated online degree programs); program page says on-campus and online versions are identical.

RIT teaches this master's in computer science online and on campus with the same curriculum: one core algorithms course, three courses in a specialization area, four electives, and a capstone. You choose how to finish. The capstone is either a project, completed in one semester, or a thesis, which usually takes two. The degree is 30 credit hours, and you can enter in the fall or spring term. Part-time study means one to eight credit hours a semester, which is how most working students pace it. Admission works the same way for both formats, and if you lack a prerequisite you can be assigned bridge courses in the first semester.

Those courses don't count toward the 30 credits, and you can waive them by passing the bridge exams at orientation. Online students pay the reduced Graduate RIT online tuition rate rather than the on-campus rate. RIT also says the frequency of online course offerings varies from semester to semester, so talk to the program contact when you build your plan of study. The program groups electives into clusters such as Data Science, Distributed Systems, Programming Languages and Tools, Security and Theory, so you can steer your coursework toward the software side of the field.

Online program cost: Non-resident distance education graduate tuition per credit hour, Fall 2026, times the 30 semester hours required. Tuition only: the DE technology fee, other fees and the Engineering and Technology fee are not included..

You can finish East Carolina's MS in computer science online or on campus, and the school describes the online route as one that lets working professionals balance study with the rest of their lives. At the Fall 2026 non-resident distance education graduate rate, tuition is $1,044.06 per credit hour. Across the 30 semester hours the degree requires, that comes to about $31,322 before fees. Nine of those hours are core courses, one each from foundations, systems and software. The software group includes software engineering foundations, software project management and software testing, and you can count up to six hours of software engineering electives toward the degree.

The final 21 hours depend on the option you pick. The thesis option takes 6 hours of research plus 15 hours of electives, and you present your work orally. The project option takes a 3-hour research project with a written report plus 18 hours of electives, and it can involve building a software system or a proof of concept. Regular admission asks for a 3.0 undergraduate GPA. If your bachelor's is in engineering, mathematics, statistics or a similar field, the school can require extra courses first, such as discrete mathematics and data structures. Federal data shows about 17 master's graduates a year, so classes stay small.

NC State delivers this master's through Engineering Online, and you apply for the Distance Track version of the degree. It's 31 credit hours with no thesis, aimed at working professionals who already hold an undergraduate computer science degree. Lectures from the on-campus classes are recorded and posted, so you can watch when it suits you. But you still follow the on-campus calendar for homework and exams, and in-class exams must be proctored. Full-time employed students can take two online courses a semester, and the department recommends starting with one.

You can take courses as a non-degree student before you apply, and up to twelve of those hours, or hours from another institution, count toward the 31. The core requires two courses from one of two categories, Theory or Systems, and one from the other. Admission asks for a 3.0 GPA, calculus and probability coursework, and the CS courses the page names; international applicants submit GRE scores. The program is open to people who work or live in the United States. Tuition is set by the North Carolina legislature, and in-state and out-of-state rates both apply to Engineering Online courses.

Online program cost: 2026-2027 standard tuition per credit hour times 36 semester hours; a separate $100 per-semester resource fee is not included.

Franklin's online computer science master's is 36 semester hours at $690 per credit hour for 2026-2027, or $24,840 in tuition before the school's per-semester resource fee. The university's tuition guarantee locks that rate from your first term through graduation as long as you stay actively enrolled, so a later increase won't reach you. Transfer is generous: you can bring in up to 16 credits through certifications, earlier coursework or a mix of both, which can shorten the program and cut the bill. GRE and GMAT scores aren't required. If you didn't study computer science, expect prerequisite courses in programming before the graduate work starts.

The curriculum covers software design and testing along with data analytics and machine learning, and you choose electives to steer it. Internship and independent study are both options there. The last course is a four-credit capstone where you research a current computer science topic and write an original paper and presentation, including the economics of estimating a software project. Franklin is a nonprofit built for working adults, which is why the online format and the transfer policy are the center of the program rather than an add-on.

Online program cost: 2026-2027 tuition as stated on the page; page notes additional program fees may apply and are not included.

Merrimack's M.S. in Computer Science is 100 percent online, full or part time, with six start dates a year and eight-week terms. You take one course at a time and can finish in as few as 16 to 18 months. Tuition for 2026-2027 is $750 per credit across 32 credits, $24,000 in all, and the page adds that additional program fees apply. You choose a concentration in software engineering or artificial intelligence. The software engineering one covers design, development, testing and maintenance of software systems, which is the path for you if the goal is a developer job.

Advanced Programming Concepts includes client-server applications and design patterns such as factories, decorators and MVC. A capstone project is optional, and it has to center on building a software product. Students who already program can waive the foundations course and take the capstone instead. You don't need a technical background or coding experience to apply, and GRE and GMAT scores aren't required. If you do start without programming experience, a foundational course adds four credits, though its tuition is waived. A twelve-credit AI Engineering Certificate is embedded in the program.

Online program cost: 2026-27 Online Distance Education graduate rate for the Master of Science in Computer Science.

Vanderbilt runs its online MS in computer science as its own track. You apply to the online program separately from the residential one, and the two formats can't be combined to finish a single degree. If you want the whole degree from home, that separation is the main thing to understand before you apply. The department's graduate program covers thesis and non-thesis Master of Science degrees in computer science, and admission looks at your academic record, letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose.

The department says GRE scores are indefinitely waived for admission consideration. On funding, the department states that funding is currently not available to students admitted to the master's program, so you should plan on paying your own way and weigh that against the other online options you're comparing. The department admits for fall and spring, so check the current cycle before you plan around a start term. The university holds the R1 research classification, and IPEDS shows about 65 computer science master's graduates a year.

How to compare cost

Per credit versus per term

Most programs here charge by the credit, so the total is the rate times the credits you still need. A few charge a flat rate per term, where finishing sooner costs less. Multiply any program’s rate by your remaining credits to compare.

Price against quality

A low price is worth less if you don’t finish. The affordability score already weighs completion and accreditation, but check each card for format, capstone and transfer rules, and compare with the top of our online bachelor’s ranking.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest online computer science degree?

Of the fully online computer science bachelor’s programs with a price on the school’s site, University of the People costs the least, at $7,260 for the whole degree. For a master’s, Georgia Institute of Technology is lowest at $6,810. Each total is the school’s online rate times the credits the degree requires, before aid and transfer credit.

How is the affordability score calculated?

For bachelor’s programs, out of 100: cost 50 points, the school’s eight-year completion rate for all entering students 25, program size 15 and ABET accreditation 10. For master’s: cost 55, size 15, the school’s research activity 15 and an ABET-accredited department 15. Cost uses fixed dollar bands on the whole-degree price.

How much does an online computer science bachelor’s degree cost?

Across the 25 programs here, the price for the whole degree runs from $7,260 to $86,400, with a median of $58,800. Transfer credit lowers it, often by a lot if you already have college credits.

How much does an online master’s in computer science cost?

Across the 27 programs here, the price runs from $6,810 to $87,744, with a median of $24,000.

Why isn’t the cheapest program ranked first?

Cost is the biggest factor, but not the only one. A program that costs a little more and sees more of its students finish, or is larger and accredited, can score higher. The cost column lets you sort by price alone.
