Hard, but in predictable ways
Is software engineering hard? Yes, it is demanding, but the difficulty is predictable. It comes from three places: a solid block of college math, a full four-year credit load with a lot of programming outside class, and large team projects that ask you to plan, test and communicate, not just write code.
None of that requires being a genius. It requires keeping up. Accredited programs ask for at least 30 credits of math and science, and the typical bachelor’s is 120 credits. At the schools that offer the degree, the median six-year graduation rate is 64%. The sections below take each part in turn, with the source for every figure.
What makes it hard, and how much
| What | How much |
|---|---|
| Math and science | At least 30 credits in accredited programs, including discrete mathematics, probability and statistics |
| Engineering topics | At least 45 credits in accredited programs |
| Total credits | Median 120, range 120 to 133, across 25 programs that publish a total |
| Software practice | 235 of 467 minimum curriculum hours: design, testing, process, requirements and quality |
| Team capstone | Required in accredited programs; stated on 24 of 64 program pages we saved |
| Finishing | Median six-year graduation rate of 64% at the schools that offer it (all students, not just the major) |
How much math is there?
How much math does software engineering take? More than many students expect. ABET, which accredits engineering programs, requires “a minimum of 30 semester credit hours (or equivalent) of a combination of college-level mathematics and basic sciences”. In a 120-credit degree, that is about a quarter of everything you take.
Which math? The software engineering criteria name discrete mathematics, probability and statistics. Discrete math is the one that surprises people: it is about logic, sets, proofs and counting rather than calculating answers, and it underpins how you reason about programs. The rest of the math and science is set by each program, so read the course list before you apply.
The national curriculum guideline backs this up. SE2014 sets 80 minimum hours for mathematical and engineering fundamentals, 17% of its 467 total. That is one of the larger areas in the whole curriculum.
Is the math the hardest part? For many students, yes, because it builds on itself: a weak spot in an early course follows you into the next. The good news is that it is also the most predictable part. You know which courses are coming, so you can prepare, and steady practice works better here than talent.
How heavy is the workload?
How many credits is the degree? Among the 25 software engineering bachelor’s programs in our data that publish a total, the median is 120 credits, and the range is 120 to 133. Spread over four years, 120 credits is about 15 credits a semester. The full breakdown is in software engineering degree requirements.
Why does it feel heavier than the credit count suggests? Because programming courses ask for work outside class. A lab or a project does not end when the lecture does: you write code, test it, find what is broken and fix it, and that cycle takes as long as it takes. No national survey measures study hours by major, so be wary of exact weekly figures you see quoted online.
What helps most is rhythm. Students who start assignments early, test as they go and ask for help in office hours tend to find the load steady rather than overwhelming. The same habits are what employers look for later.
Teamwork and the capstone
What is different about software engineering compared with just learning to code? The team work. The national guideline sets 235 of its 467 minimum hours on practice areas, led by software design (48 hours), software verification and validation (37 hours) and software process (33 hours). Those are skills you learn by doing them with other people.
Accredited programs must end with “a culminating major engineering design experience”, often run as a team capstone. Of the 64 software engineering bachelor’s program pages we saved, 24 state a capstone or senior design project.
Why is that hard? Because it is closer to a real job than anything else in the degree. You gather requirements from a client or instructor, split the work, agree on a design, review each other’s code, keep a schedule and present the result. Students who are strong programmers alone sometimes find this the toughest part; students who are organized and communicate well often find it the most rewarding.
How many students finish?
Do most software engineering students graduate? There is no federal graduation rate by major, so the closest measure is the school’s own rate. At the 72 schools in our data that offer the bachelor’s and report one, the median six-year graduation rate is 64%. Half the schools fall between 50% and 71%, and the full range runs from 28% to 87%.
What does that tell you? Mostly that where you study matters as much as what you study. These rates cover every student at the school, not just engineering majors, so they reflect the school’s support, its students and its cost as much as the difficulty of any major. When you compare programs, a school’s graduation rate is one of the most useful single numbers to check. The bachelor’s rankings use a broader completion rate, which also counts part-time and transfer students, alongside net price, ABET status and size.
Is it harder than computer science?
Is software engineering harder than computer science? Neither is harder across the board; they are hard in different places. Computer science puts more weight on theory: in the CS2023 core, math and statistics take 55 of 270 hours (20%), and algorithms add 32 more. Software engineering keeps a large math share and swaps some theory for design, testing and team process.
If proofs and abstract problems come naturally to you, computer science may feel easier. If you like building and organizing things with other people, software engineering may. Software engineering vs computer science compares the two curricula area by area, with the programs, costs and graduation rates for each.
Is the job itself hard?
Does it get easier after graduation? It gets different. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the qualities that matter for software developers, the occupation that includes software engineers: analytical skills, communication skills, creativity, attention to detail, interpersonal skills and problem-solving skills. Two of the six, communication and interpersonal skills, are about working with people.
The work rewards the same habits the degree trains: breaking big problems into small ones, testing your own assumptions and explaining your thinking to a team. The tools and languages also keep changing, so learning does not stop at graduation.
Is it worth it? The outlook is strong: BLS projects 10.2% growth for software developers from 2025 to 2035, against 3.5% for all occupations, with about 95,300 openings a year. The median pay was $135,980 in May 2025. The software engineer career guide covers the work and the route in.

No national survey measures study hours by major. The workload follows from the credits, about 15 a semester, plus programming projects outside class.
You’ll often read that most students drop out.
There is no federal figure by major. At schools offering the degree, the median six-year graduation rate for all students is 64%.
Is it right for you?
- You enjoy solving puzzles and don’t mind getting stuck. That is most of the job, and most of the degree. You will likely do well.
- Math worries you. Take as much math as you can before you start, and plan for tutoring in discrete math. The math is a known hurdle, not a wall.
- You like working with people. The team projects and capstone play to your strengths, and so does the job.
- You want the most support while you study. Compare schools’ graduation rates, class sizes and tutoring alongside the program itself. Where you study changes how hard it feels.
Frequently asked questions
Is software engineering a hard major?
It is demanding in three ways: math (accredited programs require at least 30 credits of math and science), a full credit load (a median of 120 credits for the bachelor’s), and large team projects. It is manageable for students who keep up with the math and program regularly.
How much math is in a software engineering degree?
At least 30 semester credits of math and basic sciences in an ABET-accredited program, about a quarter of a 120-credit degree. The software criteria name discrete mathematics, probability and statistics; each program sets the rest, so check its course list.
