Key takeaways
0135 of the 75 programs here are ABET-accredited, and San Jose State, Florida Gulf Coast and UT Dallas lead the ranking, all three accredited. ABET says licensure and certification often require an accredited degree. NCEES stopped offering a software engineering PE exam after 2019, so if a license is a goal, ask your state board which degrees it accepts.
02Snow College, Utah Valley University and University of Virginia's College at Wise are ABET-accredited and have an average net price under $10,500 a year. Utah Valley University also ranks in our top 10. Net price is what aided first-year students pay after grants; out-of-state students at a public university usually pay more.
03Public universities here have a median net price of $16,544 a year, against $26,754 at private schools. Net price counts tuition, fees, housing and books after grants, averaged across a school’s aided first-year students, so run each school’s net price calculator with your own numbers. See what they cost.
04Completion rates run from 29% to 87%: the share of each school’s entering students, part-time and transfer students included, who earn a degree within eight years. It covers the whole school, not software engineering majors, so ask the department what share of its own majors finish, and how long they take.
0538 of the 75 ranked programs graduate fewer than 10 students a year; San Jose State, Iowa State and Western Governors are the largest. In a small program, ask how often each required upper-level course is offered and how big the classes are, so that one missed course doesn’t push back your graduation.
06Some programs set a math bar for entry: UT Arlington (math through precalculus expected on entry), Bowling Green State (SAT math 550 or ACT math 22 to enter the major) and RIT (precalculus required of transfer applicants). Required co-op is rarer; RIT’s 40 weeks of co-op and internship is the clearest case. Check both on each program’s page before you apply.
Methodology
How we ranked
Who qualifies, the 4 scored factors, and the points each one carries.
Every bachelor’s program is scored out of 100 on 4 published figures, each from a federal dataset or the accreditor’s own list. The same program shows the same score on every page of this site.
Who gets ranked
Pass / fail
A bachelor’s degree titled software engineering, with every scored figure
The program must appear in federal IPEDS completions data at the bachelor’s level. A program missing one of the figures below is not ranked: it is never scored on a guess, and the weights are never quietly rescaled.
Scored factors
100 pts total
ABET accreditation25 pts
Whether the program is on ABET’s own accredited list under its Engineering Accreditation Commission. A school’s own claim is not counted.
Scoring: 25 points if listed, none if not.
Completion35 pts
The school’s eight-year award rate from IPEDS Outcome Measures: the share of all entering undergraduates, part-time and transfer students included, who earned a degree or certificate within eight years. It covers adult and part-time students, unlike the six-year rate, but it is the school’s figure, not the program’s, because no federal source reports one by major.
Scoring: The rate as a share of 35: a 60% rate earns 21.0 points.
Tuition25 pts
The school’s average net price from IPEDS (2022-23): what first-time, full-time students who receive aid pay after grants, for tuition, fees, housing and books. Public schools report the in-state figure. It is the school’s figure, not the program’s.
Scoring: Fixed dollar tiers, so one program’s points never depend on which others are ranked:
Under $12,00025 pts
$12,000 to $15,99920 pts
$16,000 to $19,99915 pts
$20,000 to $24,99910 pts
$25,000 to $31,9995 pts
$32,000 or more0 pts
Program size15 pts
Graduates a year: the IPEDS average over 2021-22 to 2023-24 for this program’s field and degree level.
Scoring: A log scale that reaches full points at 100 graduates a year, so a large program does not win just by being large. The table shows the raw average.
Not ranked. A program with no graduates in any of the three IPEDS years, or whose own page states a price of its own (degree completion, extended learning or an online-only rate), isn’t ranked, since a figure the score uses wouldn’t describe it. It still appears on its state page, and is scored once its figures do describe it.
Not scored. Published costs from a program’s own page appear on its card where the school states one, but are not scored: few programs publish one, and they are not on the same basis as each other. Curriculum, faculty and outcomes after graduation are not scored either, because no source reports them the same way for every program.
Read the full methodology: every data source and its year, how state and city ranks work, and what we leave out.

Software engineering is one of four computing-related engineering majors at Iowa State University, alongside computer, cyber security and electrical, and the page calls it the largest computing major on campus. The degree is one of the earliest developed programs in the country. Every engineering major starts with a basic program of courses common to all engineering curricula, and students normally take most of them in the first year. For 2025-26, software engineering students preferred minors in cyber security, data science and applied artificial intelligence.
Co-ops and internships are not required by the college, but they are highly encouraged, they must be paid, and they must involve the practice of engineering. The college reports that 75% of its engineering students graduate with engineering work experience and that 1,400 employers recruit engineering students each year, and it offers one-on-one career advising. You must own or obtain a laptop appropriate to your program, and you can work alongside professors on undergraduate research. A four-year course plan is posted. ABET accredits the major through its Engineering Accreditation Commission.

The degree totals 130 hours, and 70 of them are the major. Core courses include SEN 2301 Computer Architecture, SEN 3301 Microprocessors, SEN 3302 Embedded Systems and ENS 3351 Engineering Ethics, and you build skills in programming, embedded systems design, the Internet of Things, software metrics and artificial intelligence.
In the senior year every student chooses a focus area and completes a design project, taken through Engineering Design Project + Lab I and II. Electives can be met by maximizing the engineering internship (six internship hours count toward the degree) or by taking two of six listed computer information systems courses. You need a C or better in every ENS, SEN and CIS course. The curriculum embraces a Christian worldview.

Careers
Jobs and pay after the degree
What software developers earn and how fast the job is growing, from BLS.
The job these degrees train for is software developer, and BLS tracks it closely. Software developers earned a median of $135,980 a year in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with the middle half between $105,210 and $171,980. About 1,688,000 people held the job.
BLS projects software developer jobs to grow 10.2% from 2025 to 2035, against 3.5% for all occupations, with about 95,300 openings a year. Software quality assurance analysts and testers, a related job BLS tracks separately, earned a median of $104,300, and that job is projected to grow 5.7% over the same decade.

How to choose
How to choose a software engineering bachelor’s program
The score builds a shortlist; these questions settle it.
The score is a starting point, not a verdict. It rewards four things every program reports the same way: the school’s completion rate, its net price, accreditation and size. It can’t see the courses, the teaching or the projects, so read the shortlist’s own pages before you apply. Here is what to look for, in roughly the order it matters.
Accreditation first
35 of the 75 programs here are on ABET’s list, and 25 of the top 25. It matters most if you might seek an engineering license later: ABET says licensure and certification often require a degree from an accredited program. The highest-ranked program without it is University of California-Irvine, at #26. See ABET-accredited software engineering programs for the accredited list on its own and what the review covers.
The curriculum behind the title
A software engineering degree and a computer science degree can look alike from the outside. The difference shows in the required upper-level courses: requirements, design and architecture, testing and verification, and a team project for a real client. Open the program’s course list and count how many of those are required rather than electives.
The capstone is the clearest signal. Where a program’s page says its capstone runs a full year or two semesters, the ranking table notes it under the school’s name: California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, Montana Technological University, State University of New York at Oswego.
Co-op and internships
Paid work before graduation gives you something concrete to show employers. Rochester Institute of Technology’s page states “40 weeks of required cooperative education and internship”, which is why its row reads “40 weeks of required co-op”. Ask the department what share of its graduates complete one, and whether the school runs a co-op office or leaves you to find placements yourself.
The real cost
The net price column is the school’s average for aided first-year students after grants, a median $20,696 a year. Your own figure depends on your aid, and out-of-state students at a public university usually pay more. Run each school’s net price calculator with your own family’s numbers; it is the closest estimate of what you will pay.
How are software engineering bachelor’s programs ranked here?
Each program is scored out of 100: completion (35 points, the school’s eight-year rate for all entering students), average net price (25), ABET accreditation (25) and graduates a year (15). 75 programs have every figure and are ranked.
How much does a bachelor’s in software engineering cost?
At the 75 schools with a figure, the average net price runs $7,258 to $48,037 a year, with a median of $20,696. It is the IPEDS figure for what aided first-year students pay after grants, for tuition, fees, housing and books, averaged across the whole school.
How many software engineering bachelor’s programs are ABET-accredited?
35 of the 75 programs here are on ABET’s own accredited list under its Engineering Accreditation Commission. A school’s own claim is not counted.
Can you earn a software engineering bachelor’s degree online?
Yes. 6 of the 75 programs here can be completed online, according to each school’s own program page.
Why isn’t every software engineering bachelor’s program ranked?
A program is ranked only when every scored figure describes it. 3 are missing a figure, 1 publishes its own price, which the federal tuition figure doesn’t describe, and 6 have no graduates yet. None is scored on a guess, and each still appears on its state page.
What do software engineering graduates earn?
Software developers, the job most of these degrees lead to, earned a median of $135,980 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. BLS projects the job to grow 10.2% from 2025 to 2035.
Which software engineering bachelor’s programs require co-op or a year-long capstone?
Where a program’s own page states it, the ranking table shows it under the school’s name. California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, Montana Technological University, State University of New York at Oswego describe a capstone that runs two semesters or a full year. The table shows “40 weeks of required co-op” for Rochester Institute of Technology.
