Key takeaways

  1. Computer systems analysts sit between a business and its technology. They study how an organization works, decide which systems would make it work better, and see those systems through installation, testing and day-to-day trouble. BLS counted 519,530 of them in May 2025, at a median of $105,850.
  2. The work is more hands-on than the title suggests. O*NET’s top-ranked task for the job is troubleshooting broken programs and systems, ahead of the business analysis people expect. Analysts are the people who know both what the system is for and why it stopped working.
  3. This is one of the computer jobs found almost everywhere. Beyond tech and consulting firms, government, insurance carriers and related activities and general medical and surgical hospitals all employ analysts in large numbers, so the job exists in most regions and in sectors that are steadier than software startups.
  4. BLS lists a bachelor’s degree as the typical entry education, but not necessarily in computer science. Information systems and business degrees are common routes, and so is moving over from inside a business once you know its processes. Compare degree programs.
  5. BLS projects 7.9% growth from 2025 to 2035, against 3.5% for all occupations, with about 32,900 openings a year. The ladder runs from analyst to senior or lead analyst, then toward architecture, project leadership or IT management; BLS publishes no pay by level, so this guide shows the full range instead.
The job

What computer systems analysts do

Counted by BLS as computer systems analysts.

Computer systems analysts decide how an organization should use its computers, and then make that decision work. They map how a process runs today, find where systems are slow, duplicated or disconnected, recommend changes and see them through, often staying on as the person who supports the system afterward.

The tasks below come from O*NET. Read them in order and the job looks less like a planning role than people expect: fixing, supporting and testing systems rank alongside the analysis that the title promises.

The core tasks

  1. Troubleshoot program and system malfunctions to restore normal functioning.
  2. Provide staff and users with assistance solving computer-related problems, such as malfunctions and program problems.
  3. Test, maintain, and monitor computer programs and systems, including coordinating the installation of computer programs and systems.
  4. Use the computer in the analysis and solution of business problems, such as development of integrated production and inventory control and cost analysis systems.
  5. Coordinate and link the computer systems within an organization to increase compatibility so that information can be shared.
  6. Use object-oriented programming languages, as well as client and server applications development processes and multimedia and Internet technology.

Industries

Where computer systems analysts work

The largest employers of computer systems analysts among the 24 industries we checked, BLS OEWS, May 2025.

Unlike most computer jobs, this one follows the rest of the economy. Government, hospitals, insurers, banks and universities all run large systems that someone has to understand from both the business side and the technical side.

In its projection notes, BLS names monetary authorities-central bank, direct insurance (except life, health, and medical) carriers and accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services as industries where analysts are expected to make up a growing share of jobs, citing new digital payment systems and the digitizing and automating of work processes.

Day to day

A day in the job

Illustrative: a composite day built from the job’s core tasks, not a record of one person’s day. Real days vary by team and employer.

  1. MorningWorking through overnight tickets: a report that failed to run and a user who cannot post invoices, traced to a job that stopped after an update.
  2. Late morningShadowing a warehouse supervisor to see how stock is really received, and noting where the system forces staff into workarounds.
  3. AfternoonWriting requirements for a link between the inventory and finance systems so records stop being keyed in twice.
  4. Late afternoonReviewing a vendor’s proposed change with a developer and testing it against the cases the department cares about.
  5. End of dayUpdating the process diagram and sending a plain-language summary to the department head on what changes and when.

Five questions before you commit

If most of these get a yes, the job is likely a good match.

  1. Do you enjoy figuring out how an organization actually works? The job starts with understanding a process well enough to see where a system could help or is getting in the way.
  2. Can you translate between technical and non-technical people?Analysts spend much of the day explaining business needs to developers and technical limits to managers.
  3. Are you comfortable with troubleshooting under pressure? When a system the business depends on fails, the analyst is often the first call.
  4. Do you like writing things down precisely?Requirements, specifications and process maps are the analyst’s main products.
  5. Would you rather know a business deeply than chase the newest tools? The analysts who advance are the ones who understand an industry as well as its software.
