Key takeaways
01Kennesaw State, UH-Clear Lake and North Dakota State lead the 10 ranked online programs. Each is scored at the school’s out-of-state campus rate, the price a student in another state would see, and on program size. Read the score as a shortlist, then compare how each program actually teaches online. How we ranked.
02Bowling Green State, Purdue and West Virginia publish their own per-credit rate, from $615 to $950. That rate, not the federal campus figure, is what their online students pay, so they aren’t ranked here. If one is on your list, multiply the rate by the credit total and add fees to compare.
033 of the 10 programs here are fully online; the rest are campus programs you can also finish online. Neither kind is better on its face. Ask whether classes meet live at set times or are recorded, and whether any part of the degree needs a trip to campus.
04Out-of-state graduate tuition at the ranked schools has a median of $20,959, a school-wide campus average that leaves out fees. An online program can charge its own rate instead, so treat the table figure as a guide and confirm the online price with the school before you compare two programs.
05Kennesaw State and Stevens graduate the most students a year among the ranked online programs, and 3 of the 10 graduate fewer than 10. A small online program can still serve you well, but ask about cohort size and how often each required course runs before you commit.
Methodology
How we ranked
Who qualifies, the 4 scored factors, and the points each one carries.
Every master’s program is scored out of 100 on 4 published figures, each from a federal dataset or the accreditor’s own list. The same program shows the same score on every page of this site. This page ranks the online programs among themselves, with the scores they carry on the master’s ranking.
Who gets ranked
Pass / fail
A master’s degree titled software engineering, with every scored figure
The program must appear in federal IPEDS completions data at the master’s level. A program missing one of the figures below is not ranked: it is never scored on a guess, and the weights are never quietly rescaled.

The school’s 2021 Carnegie Classification, as IPEDS reports it. Research-active universities run more graduate courses and labs, and have more faculty who can supervise a thesis.

ABET-accredited department15 pts
Whether the same school’s software engineering or computer science bachelor’s is on ABET’s own list. ABET doesn’t accredit these master’s programs, so this shows whether the department behind one has passed an outside review.
Scoring: 15 points if the school has one, none if not.
Not ranked. A program with no graduates in any of the three IPEDS years, or whose own page states a price of its own (degree completion, extended learning or an online-only rate), isn’t ranked, since a figure the score uses wouldn’t describe it. It still appears on its state page, and is scored once its figures do describe it.
Not scored. Published costs from a program’s own page appear on its card where the school states one, but are not scored: few programs publish one, and they are not on the same basis as each other. Curriculum, faculty and outcomes after graduation are not scored either, because no source reports them the same way for every program.
Read the full methodology: every data source and its year, how state and city ranks work, and what we leave out.

How to choose
How to choose an online software engineering master’s
Online can mean several things; these questions pin it down.
Every program here says on its own page that it can be completed online, but online can mean different things. 3 of the 10 are fully online; the other 7 offer the same program on campus and online. Before you compare scores, decide what you need the program to fit around.
Live or self-paced classes
Some online courses meet at set times by video; others post lectures you watch when you can. Live classes give you a cohort and a schedule; recorded ones fit around a full-time job and other time zones. Ask the program which it uses, course by course, and whether exams are proctored online or in person.
The price you will actually pay
The tuition column is the school’s out-of-state campus rate, a school-wide graduate average. An online program can set its own per-credit rate regardless of residency, so its real price can differ from that figure. Take the program’s published rate, multiply by its credit total, add fees, and compare that number, not the table’s.
Admission
University of Houston-Clear Lake (no gre) state their GRE policy plainly on the program page, and the table shows it under the school’s name. For the rest, read the current admission page for test policy, the undergraduate background expected, and how many start dates the program has each year.
How are online software engineering master’s programs ranked?
With the master’s rubric: graduate tuition (57 points) and graduates a year (43 points). Tuition is the out-of-state campus rate, because an online student is usually not a resident of the school’s state. Each program’s score is the same one it carries on the master’s ranking.
How much does an online master’s in software engineering cost?
Out-of-state graduate tuition for 2023–24 runs $11,377 to $41,380 at these schools, with a median of $20,959. It is a school-wide campus average that excludes program fees, and an online program may charge its own flat rate instead.
Can you earn a master’s in software engineering fully online?
Yes. 3 of the 10 programs here are fully online according to the school’s own page; the others are offered both on campus and online.
How was each program confirmed as online?
A program is on this list only when its own page says it can be completed online, fully or as an option alongside campus study.
Is an online master’s in software engineering the same degree as the campus one?
At the 7 schools here that offer the program both on campus and online, the page describes one program with two ways to take it. Ask the school whether the diploma or transcript says anything about delivery.
How long is an online master’s in software engineering?
4 of the 10 programs here state a credit total, from 30 to 30 credits. How long that takes depends on how many courses you take a term.
