Key takeaways

  1. Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly Pomona lead 592 computer science bachelor’s degrees ranked on the same four figures as our software engineering ranking, all three ABET-accredited. Computer science is the most common way into software engineering: these programs graduate about 21 times as many students a year as the software engineering ones. How the two degrees differ.
  2. 1 of the top 25 name a software engineering track, concentration or option on the school’s own page, and 7 state a capstone or senior design project. Those notes sit on each card and under the school’s name in the table. They are shown, not scored, so open the course list before you count on one.
  3. CSU Dominguez Hills, Cal State LA and City College (CUNY) are ABET-accredited and have an average net price under $4,600 a year. 190 of the 592 ranked programs are on ABET’s list. Net price is what aided first-year students pay after grants; out-of-state students at public schools usually pay more.
  4. Public universities here have a median net price of $14,574 a year, against $25,608 at private schools. Net price counts tuition, fees, housing and books after grants, averaged across a school’s aided first-year students, so run each school’s net price calculator with your own numbers. See what they cost.
  5. Completion rates run from 12% to 98%: the share of each school’s entering students, part-time and transfer included, who earn a degree within eight years, not just computer science majors. 186 ranked programs graduate fewer than 10 students a year; Oregon State, Maryland-College Park and Western Governors are the largest. Ask the department how often each upper-level course runs.
Methodology

How we ranked

Who qualifies, the 4 scored factors, and the points each one carries.

Every bachelor’s program is scored out of 100 on 4 published figures, each from a federal dataset or the accreditor’s own list. The same program shows the same score on every page of this site. Computer science programs are scored on the same rubric and tiers as the software engineering ranking, so the two read the same way.

Who gets ranked

Pass / fail

A bachelor’s degree titled computer science on the school’s own page, with every scored figure

The program must appear in federal IPEDS completions data at the bachelor’s level, and the school’s own program page must name the degree computer science; a federal classification alone is not enough. A program missing one of the figures below is not ranked: it is never scored on a guess, and the weights are never quietly rescaled.

Scored factors

100 pts total

ABET accreditation 25 pts
Whether the program is on ABET’s own accredited list, under its Computing or its Engineering Accreditation Commission. A school’s own claim is not counted.
Scoring: 25 points if listed, none if not.
Completion 35 pts
The school’s eight-year award rate from IPEDS Outcome Measures: the share of all entering undergraduates, part-time and transfer students included, who earned a degree or certificate within eight years. It covers adult and part-time students, unlike the six-year rate, but it is the school’s figure, not the program’s, because no federal source reports one by major.
Scoring: The rate as a share of 35: a 60% rate earns 21.0 points.
Tuition 25 pts
The school’s average net price from IPEDS (2022-23): what first-time, full-time students who receive aid pay after grants, for tuition, fees, housing and books. Public schools report the in-state figure. It is the school’s figure, not the program’s.
Scoring: Fixed dollar tiers, so one program’s points never depend on which others are ranked:
  • Under $12,00025 pts
  • $12,000 to $15,99920 pts
  • $16,000 to $19,99915 pts
  • $20,000 to $24,99910 pts
  • $25,000 to $31,9995 pts
  • $32,000 or more0 pts
Program size 15 pts
Graduates a year: the IPEDS average over 2021-22 to 2023-24 for this program’s field and degree level.
Scoring: A log scale that reaches full points at 100 graduates a year, so a large program does not win just by being large. The table shows the raw average.

Not ranked. A program with no graduates in any of the three IPEDS years isn’t ranked, since a figure the score uses wouldn’t describe it. It still appears on its state page, and is scored once its figures do describe it.

Not scored. Published costs from a program’s own page appear on its card where the school states one, but are not scored: few programs publish one, and they are not on the same basis as each other. Curriculum, faculty and outcomes after graduation are not scored either, because no source reports them the same way for every program.

Read the full methodology: every data source and its year, how state and city ranks work, and what we leave out.

The ranking

The ranking

The 592 computer science bachelor’s programs with every scored figure, highest score first. A line under a school’s name notes a software engineering track, capstone or co-op where the school’s page states one. Sort by any column; press a school’s name to jump to its details.

Every UCLA computer science major finishes with a capstone. The catalog calls it a designated capstone major, and students complete either a software engineering course or a major product design course (Computer Science 130 or 152B). Graduates are expected to work productively on a team with people from other specialties and to design a software or digital hardware system within realistic constraints. The curriculum is built for students who want professional preparation in computing without a strong interest in hardware. Coursework covers software engineering, programming languages, data structures, computer architecture, theory of computation, operating systems, distributed systems, networks, compiler construction and artificial intelligence.

Beyond the required courses, majors take at least five computer science electives, a minor or technical support area, and a preparation sequence in mathematics and physics. The program sits in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science and is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. UCLA is a public university of about 47,300 students with a 93% six-year graduation rate. Brigham Young University builds its computer science major on a 13-course core that includes Advanced Software Construction, Web Programming, Systems Programming and Software Design, so you're writing real code well before electives start. Those electives come to 21 hours, and the list leans toward working software: QA and DevOps, Software Engineering, Verification and Validation, and Distributed System Design. One elective route is a two-course software engineering capstone (Soft Eng Capstone 1 and 2), with data science and general capstone sequences beside it.

Short one-credit Software Engineering Labs can count toward electives too. Every course in the major needs a C- or better, and the major runs 74 to 75 credit hours. In your last term you sit a senior exit interview with the department, the final step in a major that ABET's Computing Accreditation Commission accredits. BYU is a private nonprofit university with 35,873 students and an 81% six-year graduation rate. IPEDS lists its undergraduate tuition at $6,496 a year, the same figure in state and out of state. Admission to computer science at the University of North Florida is selective: students must pass Programming I and Calculus I with a C or better before the School of Computing admits them to the major. The 120-credit degree then moves through a computing common core (Computational Structures, Programming II, Data Structures, legal and ethical issues in computing, databases and computer networks) and ten major requirements, including Software Engineering, Systems Programming, Operating Systems, Construction of Language Translators, Algorithms, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and computer architecture. Students pick three upper-level computing electives, and up to 3 credit hours of Experiential Studies can count toward them.

Two exit requirements apply: proficiency in a high-level programming language and an oral presentation evaluated in an upper-level computing course. The school enforces a one-repeat rule, so a student who does not pass a prerequisite or core course on the second attempt is blocked from registering for School of Computing courses. Students in the accelerated BS-MS program can apply two graduate courses toward the major electives. ABET accredits the degree through its Computing Accreditation Commission. UNF is a public university in Jacksonville with 16,154 students and a 69 percent six-year graduation rate; undergraduate tuition is $3,996 in state and $16,799 out of state, and the school awards about 67 computer science bachelor's degrees a year.

At UC Davis, computer science is one of two majors run by the Department of Computer Science. The Computer Science & Engineering major gives students hands-on hardware experience; the CS major teaches hardware at the digital-design level on simulators and leaves more room for electives, which makes a minor or double major easier to fit. The degree requires at least 103 units, and students declare it only after completing specific courses and meeting GPA minimums. Preparatory work includes a three-course calculus sequence, linear algebra, three laboratory science courses, discrete mathematics, computer organization and a programming sequence: Programming & Problem Solving; Software Development & Object-Oriented Programming in C++; and Data Structures, Algorithms, & Programming.

Upper-division requirements cover algorithm design and analysis, theory of computation or a second algorithms course, programming languages, operating systems and system programming, computer architecture, probability, and an advanced composition course. Students then choose at least seven electives, four or more of them computer science courses and at least one in mathematics or statistics. UC Davis is a public university with 40,065 students and an 86 percent six-year graduation rate. Undergraduate tuition is $11,834 in state and $42,611 out of state, and the school awards about 367 computer science bachelor's degrees a year.

Towson University's Software Engineering track replaces the open computer science electives with a fixed set: Requirements Analysis & Modeling, Object-Oriented Design & Programming, Software Quality Assurance and Testing, and a Software Project Practicum, plus two picks from an internship, Mobile Application Development and Web-Based Programming. Every major, on a track or not, takes Software Engineering, Operating Systems, Database Management Systems, Data Communications and Networking, and Programming Languages: Design & Implementation, along with a course on the ethical and societal concerns of computer scientists.

The major runs 81 to 89 units inside a 120-unit degree, and at least 30 of those major units have to be earned at Towson. The other two tracks are Artificial Intelligence, which ends in an AI and machine learning capstone, and Cyber Operations, which the National Security Agency has recognized as a Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations since 2012. ABET's Computing Accreditation Commission accredits the B.S. The accelerated B.S./M.S., which lets you count nine master's credits toward the major, is not ABET accredited. The university's undergraduate tuition is $7,382 a year in state and $24,402 out of state, its six-year graduation rate is 69%, and it enrolls 19,401 students.

Software Engineering (C_S 3667) sits in a 41-hour computer science core at Appalachian State, alongside data structures, database, two computer systems courses, programming languages and theoretical computer science. Each student meets a capstone requirement with either a three-credit Capstone Project or a Senior Honors Thesis. A senior seminar and a writing-in-the-discipline course (a junior seminar or Technical Writing for Computer Science) round out the core. Twelve hours of computer science electives open up mobile device programming, client-side and server-side web programming, human-computer interfaces, applied machine learning and embedded systems.

An internship course counts toward those electives, capped at three hours. The 120-hour degree also requires 18 hours of mathematics, including discrete mathematics, two semesters of calculus, linear algebra and statistical data analysis, plus eight hours of science. A minor is not required, and graduation requires a 2.0 GPA in the major. Classes meet on the Boone campus, and the degree holds accreditation from the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. Appalachian State is a public university of about 21,600 students with a 75% six-year graduation rate; undergraduate tuition runs $4,242 in state and $21,238 out of state. About 80 computer science majors graduate each year.

How to choose

How to choose a computer science degree for software engineering

The score builds a shortlist; these questions settle it.

The score rewards four things every program reports the same way: the school’s completion rate, its net price, accreditation and size. It can’t see the courses, so if your goal is building software for a living, read the shortlist’s own pages for the parts below before you apply.

A software engineering track

A track turns a general computer science major into one aimed at building software: required courses in requirements, design, testing and project management on top of the core. 6 of the 592 ranked programs name one on the school’s own page, including Towson in the top 25. Where a school offers both majors, compare the track with the school’s software engineering degree before you choose.

Accreditation

190 of the 592 ranked programs are on ABET’s list. Most computer science programs are reviewed by ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission, which has its own criteria. Accreditation matters most if you might seek an engineering license later; for most software jobs, employers hire from accredited and unaccredited programs alike.

Capstone and co-op

Team projects and paid work are the closest a degree comes to the job. 7 of the top 25 state a capstone or senior design project on their own page, and the table notes it under the school’s name. Ask what share of graduates complete one and whether the school places students.

Software engineering instead?

If you already know you want to build large systems with a team, a degree titled software engineering puts more of its hours there. Our software engineering bachelor’s ranking scores 75 of them on the same rubric, so a score here and a score there mean the same thing. Software engineering vs computer science compares the two curricula area by area.

Programs not ranked here, including the 138 without a school page naming the degree, are still listed on each state page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How are the computer science bachelor’s programs ranked?

Each program is scored out of 100 on the same rubric as our software engineering ranking: completion (35 points, the school’s eight-year rate for all entering students), average net price (25), ABET accreditation (25) and graduates a year (15). 592 programs have every figure and a school page that names the degree computer science.

Is a computer science degree good for becoming a software engineer?

Yes. It is the most common route: the computer science programs ranked here graduate about 38,371 students a year, against 1,840 from the software engineering bachelor’s programs we rank. Software developers, the job most of these graduates take, earned a median of $135,980 in May 2025.

What is a software engineering track in a computer science degree?

A named concentration, option or emphasis inside the computer science major that adds courses in design, testing and team projects. 6 ranked programs name one on the school’s own page; the card says so where it does. A single course called software engineering doesn’t count as a track.

How many computer science bachelor’s programs are ABET-accredited?

190 of the 592 ranked programs are on ABET’s own list, under its Computing or its Engineering Accreditation Commission. A school’s own claim is not counted.

How much does a computer science bachelor’s degree cost?

At the 592 ranked schools, the average net price runs $4,076 to $49,727 a year, with a median of $20,985. It is the IPEDS figure for what aided first-year students pay after grants, for tuition, fees, housing and books, averaged across the whole school.

Why isn’t every computer science program ranked?

A program is ranked only when the school’s own page names the degree computer science and every scored figure describes it. 138 have no such page that we found, 5 are missing a figure and 17 are newer or priced separately. None is scored on a guess, and each still appears on its state page.

Should I study computer science or software engineering?

Both lead to software engineering jobs. Software engineering spends more of the degree on design, testing and process; computer science on theory and math, with more electives. Compare the 75 programs in our software engineering bachelor’s ranking with these, and read the curriculum of each.
